On The Avenue: Feeding Under The Bridge

truck

This week On The Avenue, our staff will once again be Feeding Under the Bridge along side the good folks at The Salvation Army Nashville. Every Friday Salvation Army takes their trusty canteen down to the Jefferson Street Bridge with a group of volunteers to serve food to the Nashville homeless population. We have volunteered to go with them once a month and so far, we’ve been having a blast.

Every fourth Friday our crew meets at The Salvation Army Area Command on the East side to prepare the food that will be served to between 200 and 250 people. These folks would otherwise go hungry that day. Once the truck is parked, we prep for service as a line forms to eat and be greeted with a smile and a kind word.

Serving begins promptly at 6:00, and all of the volunteers spring into action with impressive speed, making plates, handing out drinks and snacks, and greeting our customers. Food and time run out before you know it, and with full belly’s and a reminder that they are loved, the homeless population returns to the streets. While this isn’t curing the homeless population of Nashville, this is lending a kind word and a hot meal to those who are less fortunate.

Meeting the people you serve, face to face, is truly a blessed and humbling way to kick off your weekend.
